Junior Achievement is a nonprofit organization that recruits volunteers to teach students about economics and personal finance. Sanford Middle School has been hosting this event for many years.

On Wednesday, 11 volunteers from local businesses came to Sanford Middle School to teach 8th graders about economic and personal finance. Students rotated five sessions and learned about topics such as international trade, business, and culture.

“Financial literacy is extremely important,” said Danielle Moody, a presenter from Moody’s Collision & Auto Body Repair. “Some of the high school courses are fantastic, too, with simple personal finance lessons like how to get a credit card, what to worry about when you get a credit card and things like that. It’s important to expose these kids to what money means.”

Presenters included  Jessica Owens from Kennebunk Savings, Paul Bourret a Community Volunteer, Betty Olson from Camden National Bank, Caroline Blanchard and Pamela Bennett, Jr. from Junior Achievement Maine,  Laura Buonaiuto from Dun and Bradstreet, Corey Buzzell from Head Invest,  Kyle Barrett and Bryanna Saucier from Kennebunk Savings, Adam Boucher from Dead River.

Thank you so much to SMS Social Studies Department hear Erin Barry, who coordinates Junior Achievement experiences for 7th and 8th graders each spring!
